What are the effects of alpha one antitrypsin deficiency and is it safe for people with it to take drugs?

My friend Rory has it (liver + lungs) and I believe that he has been told his whole life that if he damages his liver or lungs in any way (e.g. alcohol/cigarettes/marijuana) it would be fatal because the organ would be unable to stop healing over itself. I have done some research and I have found that this is not the case. I would just like to hear the opinion from professionals and those with the disorder on how it works, what it does and if it is safe for him to ever get drunk or smoke some pot.

Help would be much appreciated! :-)

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency(Alpha-1) is a condition that is passed from parents to their children through their genes. For each trait a person inherits, there are usually two genes and one gene comes from each parent.People with Alpha-1 have recieved two defective alpha-1 antitrypsin genes. There are many types of alpha-1 antitrypsin genes.

The most common abnormal genes are called S and Z.People identified with Alpha-1 most commonly have two Z genes(ZZ).

Another deficient gene combination is SZ, although people with this gene combination are less likely to get lung or liver problems than those with two Z genes.

Alpha-1 occurs when there is a lack of a protein in the blood called alpha-1 antitrypsin or AAT that is produced by the liver. The main function of AAT is to protect the lungs from inflammation caused by infection and inhaled irritants such as tobacco smoke. The low level of AAT in blood occurs because the AAT is abnormal and cannot be released from the liver at a normal rate. This leads to a build up of abnormal AAT in the liver that can cause liver disease and a decrease of AAT in the blood that can lead to lung disease.

Anyone see the article in the Washington Post on how the FDA screwed up?

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/aug/06/fda-smoke-screen-on-e-cigarettes/

Sets some of that bogus report the FDA released straight! Now lets see the media run with this! Oh, I forgot - they won't because this article is well researched by a person that is qualified to speak on the effects of E-Cigs!

Thoughts?

It looks like the tobacco lobby may have gotten a hold of this report before it was published. Any attempt to limit cigarette smoking should be seriously considered. If companies are allowed to advertise and sell nicotine patches and gum, then E-Cigarettes merit serious consideration.
